STEVE BELL
In Billy’s Wake
(Excerpt from a review about the album which cites the song: “ … ‘In Billy’s Wake’ was inspired by the article ‘The Washing’ by Jessie van Eerden in Geez Magazine [http://geezmagazine.org/magazine/article/the-washing/]. She was doing the laundry one day when she got a call that her cousin Billy had committed suicide. All she could think to do was to go back to her good work of doing the laundry. The song has a pleasant, content sound that suits Bell’s voice. It includes these words: “We’re not alone/Silently watched by a sliver blue moon/Closed casket wake in a cold living room/There is good work to do…We’re not alone/Laundry awash in the mid morning sun/You can see angels dance as they try trousers on/There is good work to do.”)
IN BILLY’S WAKE
W/M: Steve Bell
We’re not alone
Laundry awash
In the mid-morning sun
You can see angels dance
As they try blouses on
There is good work to do
We’re not alone
Casting long shadows
As the day wears on
Billy had troubles
Now Billy is gone
There is good work to do
Kissing eyelids
Closed like caskets
Breaking bread
And filling baskets
Pressing dress
And swabbing soiled floors
Fast remains
Of feast and fanion
Evidence
Of ghost companions
Greeting some and
Showing some the door
We’re not alone
Wordlessly stung
By a sliver blue moon
Closed casket wake
In a cold living room
There is good work to do
We’re not alone
Laundry awash
In the mid-morning sun
You can see angels dance
As they try trousers on
There is good work to do

JANE KELLY WILLIAMS
Sometimes Love Is
SOMETIMES LOVE IS
(Jane Kelly Williams)
An imperfect, by-ear transcription …
Sometimes love is not to be spoken of
And sometimes love is not to be thought a lot of
Sometimes love is a word that’s broken over you
Sometimes love is what pulls us down
And then pulls us through
Sometimes love is crying when you won’t let it go
Sometimes love is starting over when you are old
Sometimes love is the simple touch a child can give
Sometimes love is living a lie
You never thought you’d live
But I believe if you want to find a star
You have to stand out in the dark
And if you let go and you don’t know where you are
I still believe someone’s looking for your kind of heart
Cause there’s a long night til the morning
And the red bird sings from a frozen limb
And these flowers are growing out of a rock
Though nobody sees them
Sometimes love is holding a hand that barely moves
Sometimes love is what pulls us down
And then pulls us through
Sometimes love is not ours
But sometimes, sometimes love is
