NONIE CASHMAN
Hello. If you’ve found your way to this dedicated page, it’s likely because you’ve seen a link or QR code that led you here, related to the passing of dear Nonie Cashman. These few paragraphs are my best attempt to briefly explain why.
My name is Bob Bennett and I’m a Southern California musician. To make a long story short, I’ve been playing music for sixty years and, although decidedly not famous, I’ve been performing almost all of that time and recording albums since 1979. In March 2020, when Covid-19 was new and we were all on lockdown for “two weeks to stop the spread”, I started doing weekly livestream concerts on Facebook. (Later streaming to YouTube at the same time. We’re coming up on five years of weekly gatherings. Easy to find under “Bob Bennett Weekly Live”.)
I’m gratified to say that there are a lot of “regulars” who click in each week. Their comments, song requests, back-and-forth chats, jokes, and observations have become an integral part of the proceedings. I try to greet everyone by name, so I have the interesting situation of “knowing” a whole bunch of folks online but we’ve not kept company in-person. I refer to them as “friends-not-yet-met”.
From the very beginning, Nonie was with us. She rarely missed joining us, saying hello, occasionally making a song request, and visiting. And I always asked Nonie to “give us an Ed update”! Like most of you who knew her well and loved her dearly, for me her passing is the definition of sudden and unexpected.
The day after she went to be with the Lord, Ed texted me to ask if I would sing at her Memorial Service on February 22nd. At this writing (2/5/24), that’s the plan. But Ed also really surprised me. Although it’s not uncommon for the family of a departed loved one to sometimes request “in lieu of flowers, please consider giving to …”, I have never been the designated person for such generosity. I talked with Ed about this and he assured me this is something Nonie would be on board with. So, even though I’m not a charity, ministry, or the like, I appreciate your consideration here.
