For Our Country
ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage; We humbly beseech
thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favour and glad to do
thy will. Bless our land with honourable industry, sound learning, and pure manners.
Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogancy, and from
every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes
brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom
those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be
justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth
thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with
thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we
ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.in thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The pre-roll guitar piece is an edit of a guitar composition by John Standefer which I later added words to. This excerpt ends before the vocal starts. The title of the piece (and the album it came from) is Six String Prayers. Check John’s site to purchase a download or CD. John is a consummate player and gentleman. He not only has incredible, jealousy-inducing technique, but his playing is utterly intelligent and heartfelt and his compositional and arranging instincts are just spot-on all the time. If we weren’t close friends, my envy would be intolerable for all concerned. Our one-time recorded collaboration is a career highlight for me and I’m so proud of what we did.

I referred to Billy Crockett’s wonderful 5/8/20 livestream session. In contacting Billy after-the-fact, I found out that due to licensing considerations (ah, the music business), their livestreams are not archived online. I totally get this … and it means you should connect with Billy by joining his email list (in the front page of his website) and/or keep an eye on Facebook so you can calendar and “attend” any future performances in real time. “Meanwhile back at the ranch” (more precisely, Blue Rock Artist Ranch and Studio … you see what I did there … corny, huh?), you can find out more about Billy and listen to plenty of music …

“The Kings of Summer Street” was co-written with Nashville songwriter Don Henry. His website will yield a very impressive discography of songs people have covered over the years. Perhaps his best-known song is a co-write with Jon Vezner titled “Where’ve You Been?” Kathy Mattea’s version is the version to hear. Haven’t talked with him for at least 18 years or so. But writing with him was a memorable day and I think we created a memorable song.

James Taylor has recorded a ninety-minute audiobook covering his first twenty-one years. It’s titled “Break Shot”. It should be no surprise to anyone that this master songwriter writes and reads his own prose at the same high level as his songs. Exclusive to Audible. Worth a listen if you have a way in. [Checks Audible website] Well, a couple surprises here. First, the reviews are all over the place and many more negative reviews than I would’ve ever expected. What the naysayers are on about, I just didn’t hear it in the material or the narration. Perhaps there weren’t enough car chases or something! The second surprise … as of this writing (May 10, 2020), you can get it for free. So here’s the link.

IN BILLY’S WAKE
W: Steve Bell & Jesse Harriman van Eerden
M: Steve Bell
We’re not alone
Laundry awash
In the mid-morning sun
You can see angels dance
As they try blouses on
There is good work to do
We’re not alone
Casting long shadows
As the day wears on
Billy had troubles
Now Billy is gone
There is good work to do
Kissing eyelids
Closed like caskets
Breaking bread
And filling baskets
Pressing dress
And swabbing soiled floors
Fast remains
Of feast and fanion
Evidence
Of ghost companions
Greeting some
And showing some the door
We’re not alone
Wordlessly stung
By a sliver blue moon
Closed casket wake
In a cold living room
There is good work to do …

EYES UPON THE LAND
W/M: Bob Bennett
© 2010 Bright Avenue Songs (ASCAP)
Almighty G-d, the Holy One of Israel
He does not slumber and He does not sleep
Only He knows what He has planned
His Word is certain with Promises to keep
The Lord scans the Earth back and forth
For the ones who obey His command
He will not lose those who hear His Voice
He will always keep His eyes upon the Land
So much trouble, so much pain
An endless supply of well-worn hate
Sorrows that no man can ever number
Sown into this tiny piece of real estate
But G-d keeps the Faithful preceding me
To tend this garden in the sand
Who keep the Torah and tell of Him
Who always keeps His eyes upon the Land
Now I come as a pilgrim, a Christian, and a friend
To behold the dimensions of this holy place
And to keep in my mind that what I read on the page
Really happened here in time and space
My heart is so alive and yet so sad
For I know where so much damage is from
How the very Words of G-d, such great Good News
Can be twisted into lies they should never become
I can never repay the past
But I can extend my hand
And pray the Almighty, between us all,
Will always keep His eyes upon the Land
Will always keep His eyes upon the Land
G-d will always keep His eyes …
Eyes upon the Land

THE LORICA
W/M: Gayle Salmond
(Based on St. Patrick’s Breastplate)
I bind unto myself today
The gift to call on the Trinity
The saving faith where I can say
Come Three in One, oh One in Three
Be above me, as high as the noonday sun
Be below me, the Rock I set my feet upon
Be beside me, the wind on my left and right
Be behind me, oh circle me with Your truth and light
I bind unto myself today
The love of Angels and Seraphim
The prayers and prophesies of Saints
The words and deeds of righteous men
Be above me, as high as the noonday sun
Be below me, the Rock I set my feet upon
Be beside me, the wind on my left and right
Be behind me, oh circle me with Your truth and light
God’s ear to hear me
God’s hand to guide me
God’s might to uphold me
God’s shield to hide me
Against all powers deceiving
Against my own unbelieving
Whether near or far
I bind unto myself today
The hope to rise from the dust of earth
The songs of nature giving praise
To Father, Spirit, Living Word
Be above me, as high as the noonday sun
Be below me, the Rock I set my feet upon
Be beside me, the wind on my left and right
Be behind me, oh circle me with Your truth and light
I bind unto myself today
The gift to call on the Trinity

ETERNITY IN OUR HEARTS
W: Carolyn Arends
M: Carolyn Arends & Spencer Capier
© 2001 Songs of Peer, Ltd,
Mr. Marley’s Music (ASCAP) & Spencer Capier Music
It’s the feeling that somebody’s watching
When we’re dreaming in the dark
It’s the whisper we hear in the silence
Eternity in our hearts
It’s the sense we are meant for a journey
But we don’t know where to start
It’s a restlessness nothing can settle
Eternity in our hearts
It’s the longing for a home
We have never known
A yearning and a promise
It’s the questions without any answers
It’s a puzzle missing parts
It’s the secret we’ve all but forgotten
Eternity in our hearts
It’s a burden we all bear
A blessing we all share
An aching and the hope of glory
And for mere flesh and bone to contain it
We are almost torn apart
But it’s the one thing that completes us
Eternity in our hearts
And so it’s believing that someday
We will see things as they are
And then we will know there was always
Eternity in our hearts
We are blessed with the burden of holding
Eternity in our hearts

THANKSGIVING EVE
W/M: Bob Franke
It’s so easy to dream of the days gone by
It’s a hard thing to think of the times to come
But the grace to accept every moment as a gift
Is a gift that is given to some.
What can you do with your days but work and hope?
Let your dreams bind your work to your play.
What can you do with each moment of your life
But love ‘till you’ve loved it away?
Love ‘till you’ve loved it away.
There are sorrows enough for the whole world’s end,
There are no guarantees but the grave,
But the lives that we live, and the time that we spend
Are a treasure too precious to save.
As it was, so it is, as it is shall it be,
And it shall be while lips that kiss have breath:
Many waters, indeed, only nurture love’s seed,
And its flower overshadows the power of death.

GOD BELIEVES IN YOU
Pierce Pettis
©1997, Polygram Music Publishing/
Universal Music Publishing (ASCAP)
When you start to doubt if you exist
God believes in you
Confounded by the evidence
God believes in you
When your chances seem so slim
When your light burns so dim
And you swear you don’t believe in him
God believes in you
When you rise up just to fall again
God believes in you
Deserted by your closest friends
God believes in you
When you’re betrayed with a kiss
Turn your cheek to another fist
It doesn’t have to end like this
God believes in you
Everything matters if anything matters at all
Everything matters
No matter how big
No matter how small
God believes in you
Oh, God believes in you
When you’re so ashamed that you could die
God believes in you
And you can’t do right even though you try
God believes in you
Blessed are the ones who grieve
The ones who mourn, the ones who bleed
In sorrow you sow
But in joy, you’ll reap
God believes in you
Everything matters if anything matters at all
Everything matters
No matter how big
No matter how small
God believes in you
Oh, God believes in you
When you start to doubt if you exist
God believes in you
Confounded by the evidence
God believes in you
When your chances seem so slim
When your light burns so dim
And you swear you don’t believe in him
God believes in you
Oh, God believes in you

WHO BUT GOD?
W/M: Wes King, Michael Card, Phil Naish
Who but God
Would send His Son
To condescend
And make Himself the likes
Of a mere mortal man
Who but God
Would not regard
Equality with God a precious thing
Not to be held onto
Who but God?
Only God would condescend for us
And choose the weakness of the cross
He wept the tears that conquered sin
That we might laugh with Him
Who but He who knew no sin
Would make Himself the very thing
He knew He could not look upon
Endure the cross and scorn it’s shame
And choose the very weak things
Of this world to overcome the strong
Who but God?
Only God would send us His only Son
Obedient to death
Our spotless One
Servant, Savior so lowly now
Soon every knee shall bow
Who but God
Would send His Son
To condescend
And make Himself the likes
Of a mere mortal man
Who but God?

Then a photo of me, Wes, Michael Card, and a fellow I can’t quite identify now. Sorry, perhaps an age/memory issue? IN MY LIFE
(W/M: John Lennon & Paul McCartney)
There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all
But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more
…

A SONG ABOUT BASEBALL
W/M: Bob Bennett
© 1982 Matters of the Heart Music (ASCAP)
Saturdays on the baseball field
And me afraid of the ball
Just another kid on Camera Day
When the Angels still played in L.A.
I was smiling in living black and white
Baseball caps and bubble gum
I think there’s a hole in my glove
Three-and-two, life and death
I was swinging with eyes closed
Holding my breath
I was dying on my way to the bench
But none of it mattered after the game
When my father would find me
And call out my name
A soft drink, a snow cone, a candy bar
A limousine ride in the family car
He loved me no matter how I played
He loved me no matter how I played
But none of it mattered after the game
When my father would find me
And call out my name
Dreaming of glory the next time out
My father showed me what love is about
He loved me no matter how I played
He loved me no matter how I played
But none of it mattered after the game
When my father would find me
And call out my name

CANAAN’S LAND
(Traditional)
To Canaan’s land I’m on my way
Where the soul of man never dies
My darkest nights will turn to day
Where the soul of man never dies
Dear friends, there’ll be
No sad farewell
There’ll be no tear-dimmed eye
Where all is joy and peace and love
The soul of man never dies
A rose is blooming there for me
Where the soul of man never dies
It blooms for all eternity
The soul of man never dies
A love light beams across the foam
Where the soul of man never dies
It shines to light the shores of home
The soul of man never dies
My life will end in deathless sleep
The soul of man never dies
And everlasting joy I’ll reap
The soul of man never dies
I’m on my way to that fair land
Where the soul of man never dies
Where there will be no parting and
The soul of man never dies

MICHAEL MURPHY/LIVINGSTON TAYLOR STORY:
In 2001, my pal Michael Murphy went to The Neighborhood Theater in Charlotte, NC (near where he lives) to hear Livingston Taylor. Sometimes as part of his shows, Liv brings someone up from the audience to sing the second half of a duet (“City Lights”) that he originally recorded with his brother James. On this magical night, Michael was in the right place at the right time. Aside from him, his Wife Bev, and her Dad, literally no one else in the room knew what was about to happen … because Michael was not just ready, he was Ready-with-a-Capital-R-Ready! Here is the audio evidence that I’m absolutely not overdoing this intro. Just try not to grin from ear-to-ear as you hear this. (Special thanks to Michael for hunting up the old mp3 and allowing me to post it here.)

MADNESS DANCING
W/M Bob Bennett
© 1982 Matters of the Heart Music (ASCAP)
In the middle of this madness I am dancing
Though I’m not sure why just now
I tried to be sober, I tried to be logical
But I could not stop my feet
I know I have not turned off my mind
I know there’s evil all around
But for now it’s outside and I am in my room
And joy is like a crashing tide
I don’t wanna burn no books
Don’t wanna to argue rock ‘n roll
I don’t want to shoot anyone
With my high-powered doctrine gun
Let the madness roll on like a hungry (savage) beast
Cause no one will miss me, no one will miss me
For a half an hour at least
A song came this morning and woke me
And as I listened, then I found
That I was not alone, I was standing, moving,
Dancing, dancing on holy ground
No one will miss me, no one will care
No one …
In the middle of this madness I am dancing

YOU’RE WELCOME HERE
W/M: Bob Bennett
Lord, I hear you knocking
You been knocking at the door
How long have you been waiting
Seems I never really heard you before
I’ve kind of let the place go
I’m ashamed at what you’ll find
But you can make yourself at home
If you’re sure that you don’t mind
Cause when I cry, the roof leaks
And when the wind blows, the walls are weak
But a house is known by the company it keeps
And I feel better now that you’re near
And I want to make it clear
Jesus, from now on
You’re always welcome here
There are dark rooms deep inside me
Where your light has never shown
And I tried to hide inside them
But I guess you’ve always known
That one day you would call me
And I’d awaken from my sleep
And you’d take me just the way I am
And you promise me you’d keep me
